Is your church in the south by chance? I led the worship in a southern church and had moved there from philidelphia. The culture shift was noticeable both to me and the congregation . Honestly it takes a positive attitude and a willingness to comprimise on both sides to get something that works for everyone. Too, if slower traditional music is what the congregation wants, its usually what their comfortable with. I may be wrong but I think you’are looking at “blending in” some contemporary worship over a period of time, so they grow accosted to the style, lyrics and tempo. After awhile it’ll feel as much a part of their church as the old standards.
