I was watching TV today, too. To me it wasn’t so much that that the crowd worshipped him as if a god but as a new leader of their church,and hence with respect, much in some ways as a president would be if newly elected. If you also watched the crowd, there were many who were also disappointed at the choice that was made. Many believe that the only way a new Pope could be elected is by “divine providence”. I would hope that would certainly be the case. In other words, the cardinals were led by the Holy Spirit to vote for this man to be their new Pope. Just the fact of how quickly a decision was made leads one to feel this was so. Pope Benedict XVI has a very hard act to follow in terms of being a Pope. Be one Catholic or not, we can only pray that he is led by what Christ wants for a religious leader and not by personal venues.
