Home Forums Re: Salvation: Conditional or Unconditional

Hi Brian,

I don’t think I have seen John 10 discussed in relation to this question. I will copy part of it to this post but please read all of it so you see I am not taking it out of context. In this chapter, Jesus is speaking to Pharisees who did not believe in him. The first group of sheep that know him, are the believing Jews. The “other sheep I have…” are the Gentiles that will believe on him. Pay particular attention to verses 27-29. First we are told His sheep hear His voice, they follow Him, He knows them, Then, He gives them eternal life. To clarify eternal life, He adds, that they shall never perish. Further light, no one will pluck them out of His(Jesus’) hand. To further strengthen the case, He adds, no one can pluck them out of my Father’s hand because He is greater than all.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.

The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me.

But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

I and my Father are one.

Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.

It is hard for me to believe some can not see our security in Christ in this passage. He knows his sheep before he calls them. His sheep respond. He gives them eternal life.
