Comparing homosexual marriage, heterosexual marriage and polygamy is an acceptable comparison. Personally, I don’t think there is anything inherently wrong with polygamy as long as it is consentual (the idea of seven wives- and seven potential alimony payments it they don’t work out- scares the poop out of me so it’s not really a place I’d go myself)- how would people having multiple spouses affect me or society? However, when we talk about incest, their is a very real threat of genetic mutation that could spread from incestuous breeding; therefore, it is a real public concern and should be a matter the public has a say in. Bestiality involves a violation of the ethical treatment of animals*, it is not consensual, and it doesn’t entail a legal bond anyways.
For those who make that equation (like Rick Santorum- it saddens me that one of such limited intelligence can be elected to office; and we wonder why this country is messed up in so many ways), it just shows their ignorance and irrationality. Bigotry is a public concern, should we legislate that?
No person has the right to dictate another’s sexual preference, and, as long as the marriage doesn’t carry any public concern, no person has the right to stop two people from getting married. Additionally, marriage isn’t a religious institution, it is a civil one. Therefore religious ideas should not be allowed to dictate policy regarding marriage.
Right now, Gay and Lesbian charities are my favorite to contribute to (money extremely well spent)! I am absolutely thrilled that we are on the verge of the collapse of another religiously inspired social inequity! Massachusetts rocks! I have many homosexual friends and it is quite incredible for them to finally be able to express their love the same way heterosexual people do. If some people don’t like it, that’s up to them, but it’s none of their business to interject.
*Genesis 1:26- And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.. So do Christians think animals should be treated ethically, and therefore not violated sexually?
