Aristotle thought people, animals and even plants have souls. He even rated or ranked them. People had bigger and different kinds of souls than plants. I can’t imagine a spider or a grasshopper having a soul. I think it might have something to do with the measure of aware, intellect, reason and conscience available to us and the kinds of choices we are able to make.

I’m not much for this hell concept. I can understand it as an intimidation to influence people to exercise conscience and to consider what is right from wrong. I suppose in that regard it is neccessary for civilzation to be. I do like the heaven idea but I keep thinking of that Lord’s Prayer phrase, “on earth as it is in heaven.” Maybe heaven is an idea for us to live and work towards. We need to know we’ll never get earth to be that way but we can get closer. For that matter, my vision of a perfectly perfect heaven-like earth would not be a good thing at all. It’s the kind of thing that might could just wipe out the human soul. It’s tricky but that’s how I see it.
