In the book of Genesis 24:1-4 the bible says Abraham became old and well advanced in age. Having realized that the time have come for his son Isaac to get married. He called his servant Eleazar, gave him instructions, and made him swear that he will not take wife for his son from the daughters of Canaanites. But he will go to his country and his family and take a wife for his son. Take note of how serious this instruction was. Abraham was not ready to compromise his decision that’s why he backed it up with an oath. What does Canaanites and Abraham’s family represent? Canaanites represent the unbelievers (worldly), while Abraham’s family represents the believers (church).
There is no part of our life that so influences our character, destiny, and ministry as marriage relationship. Therefore, God has from the beginning made His regulation and His specific instructions concerning marriage known to us. ). Such marriage with the unbelievers is regarded as “Unequally yoke” which God our father warned us against in 2Corrinthians 6:14-17. There is absolutely no reason that can justify such marriages or union before our heavenly father.
He forbids the intermarriage of His children with the worldly, and requires that the choice should be made by Him, in Him, and for Him. Many a life has been separated from God by a selfish and worldly friendship. Waiting to know God’s will and leading before making a choice might have saved many a sacrifice. Isaac suspended his own will to the will of God and allowed God to choose his wife for him. We must learn to surrender our own will to the father’s will too, and allow Him to make the choice for us through His Holy Spirit.
God determines when you are ripe for a partner and marriage, not you. He should be the one to search for your partner by sending His Eleazar (Holy Spirit) having realized you are ripe. You can be sure that He will not go to the Canaanites (unbelievers) in search of your partner. He knows the mind of the father and His instructions concerning your partner. God was the one who initiated the marriage in the Garden of Eden when He realized that Adam was a lonely man. Whenever God begins to see you as a lonely person, He will send your partner to you. You are not lonely until He says so; you are not ripe for marriage until He says otherwise, then you can be sure that He will start doing something immediately.
GODLY WAY TO SEEK FOR A WIFE (ISAAC EXAMPLE)
You find your wife by seeking His face in prayer. The bible says “He who finds a wife….” (Proverbs 18:22) You can only find when you seek (Matthew 7:8) Many people feels that seeking means going from one place to another in search of a partner, far from it! What the bible is saying is that we should seek the face of God in prayer. You don’t search for your partner yourself, God your father does the searching for you by sending His Eleazer (Holy Spirit). Only Him can make the right choice, Him alone knows who is truly your bone and your flesh.(Genesis 2:23).
God can only send His Holy Spirit on your behalf in search of your partner as you earnestly seek His face in prayer. In order words, partners are found in the prayer room, and not out there! Isaac was alone with God when Eleazar brought his wife to him, (Genesis 24:63) he didn’t go out to search, God did the searching for him as he was busy seeking His face. As soon as Isaac and Rebekah met, they knew they were meant for each other. When the Holy Spirit leads you to your Rebekah (partner), you will know from the very start that she is your bone and your flesh. She will not only give you water, but she will also draw water for your camels (Genesis 24:18-20) which implies that she will not only love you, but she will love your family and your ministry.
I’m yet to see where courtship is in the bible, and I won’t be surprise if it’s not there. There is no basis for courtship if the Holy Spirit make the choice for you. There is no way you can know more than Him, He can’t make mistakes, He sees beyond the physical. He knows the mind of God and His specific instructions concerning your partner. When He chooses for you, divorce will be unheard of in your marriage. Courtship to me is a man made rule, where man made standards are used to measure the other person up. It’s a canal way of seeking for a partner that’s why most of the courtship ends up in fornication and lust, and most marriages end up in divorce. They made the choice themselves using their own set standards. A true and lasting marriage and partner can be achieved only when the Holy Spirit does the searching as you seek the face of God in prayer and as you meditation on His word. When you go into marriage based on your courtship and standards, there is no guarantee for such marriages. No matter what comes out of it, you must remain there, you are not allowed to divorce. “He that gives birth to Ishmael must father him”. God will use the marriage to teach you obedience and how to seek His face. Marriage should not be taken lightly, that’s why you must invest a lot of time in prayer and in meditation as you allow the Holy spirit to lead you and make the choice for you.
