I personally would suggest a course on woeship and the meaning of it. It would have to include the ways the Israelites worshipped and what they did in the worship.

Sounds like some of the groups I have Pastored and the idea most of their taste in worship was taken from traditions, They had little idea of what worship could really include.

Hello,

I'd like to revive this thread if you don't mind. I'll begin with an observation.

I'd like to be simply transparent in expressing my views on this matter. To begin with, what matters most to me in finding meaningful worship music is passion... Passion without doctrine is meaningless, of course, as one can be passionate about anything, without regard to rightly dividing the Word of God. There is plenty of room for writing doctrinally correct P & W music, however, without offending almost anyone's (mainstream Christian) doctrine. Yet I find passion lacking in some Christian music. I struggle with some Southern Gospel music, for example. There is nothing wrong with might be called "Story" music within the genre of Christian music, but in my view it lacks intimacy. It lacks a focus on the Lord, substituting...something else. I think I need to recognize that I am worshipping the Lord Jesus Christ when I listen to and participate in Christian music. Otherwise I feel like I'm telling a story and what I've done has little significance. Sometimes I feel like the music is simply there for entertainment. One might call it "spiritually correct entertainment" but I am not spiritually uplifted. I am not focused on worshipping the Lord and I find something lacking in what I've done.

There is more to say but I'll quit for now. Any thoughts?

northword (NorthWord)

Have you tried using the musical provision you currently have but adding occasional 'new styles of hymn' along with the tried and tested traditional.

Have you heard of the music of The Iona Community? They have produced many hymns, choruses and songs with a gutsy kind of theology that can sometimes be 'awakening' or even 'shocking', (though not heretical), to a really stolid 'traditional' congregation.

Have you heard of Taize style choruses. A bit repetative but quite good during public prayers and meditation on the scriptures.

I would suggest you form a small group of interested musicians and church leaders who are willing to work hard at discovering through prayer and a lot of practice, ways in which your church can be introduced to new words and music without being made to feel that they have been 'doing it wrong all these years and need to start worshipping God properly at last'.

You know what I mean, don't you?

Love Chris.

Hey there Fox, my name is Jerry and it is nice to meet you. I am also a worship leader of our congregation in South Georgia. I too believe to be an effective worship leader and flow in the anointing of the Spirit of God we need to have a pure heart before Him. I believe that worship is an intimate encounter with God in which we can catch a glimpse of Him as we worship. What are your thoughts?

Hello. For 7 1/2 yrs we have been attending, and for 4 yrs my husband and I have been worship leaders in, a Messianic congregation in the midwest. We are gentiles, both saved in Sunday churches where we were always involved in the worship through music, he's a musician and I sang. My husband plays many different instruments(by ear)but his instruments of choice are the keyboard or piano. I am the vocal leader. We are also the overseers of worship through Davidic dance. As I said before we have always been involved in music however this is our first time in the leadership role... WOW, I have a whole new respect for those of you who have been doing this, successfully, for many yrs.

Of course the music is very different than what one hears in Sunday church as it has a lot of Hebrew lyrics( we always have the interpretation in English) and has a middle eastern sound. The language and the music are beautiful and it is an extra blessing to think that this is the kind of music that possibly Yeshua(Jesus) listened to and sang.

We are re-learning a few more of the choruses that we used to do in the Sunday churches and changing them up to make them "Messianic" by using Yeshua(Jesus),Adonai(Lord),Elohim(God),etc...when possible. Several weeks ago we re-learned Shout To The Lord (Yeshua, my Savior. Lord there is none like You.....) And come to find out nearly everyone in the congregation knew it! After that we were blessed to get to go to Israel, and when we went out in a boat on the Sea of Galilee they started playing praise and worship as we anchored off the shore of the mount of beatitudes. The first song we heard was Shout To The Lord..it was awesome! The Spirit of God was there!
