The Christian espionage novel entitled Heart of Terror was just released. One reviewer called the book "a well-written, engaging novel". The Midwest Book Review said: " Heart of Terror is an exciting twist of thriller and faith, very much recommended reading." The back cover reads: "Two ill-prepared individuals are thrown into separate terrorist worlds and forced to fight and endure. They struggle to stop the ongoing onslaught of terrorism. At times, their efforts even turn humorous. Their paths, linked together from the start, eventually merge for a potentially devastating climax." Heart of Terror is available as an ebook and from the usual outlets.

DanielMacAulay sat on the wagon seat looking at the herd of McKinley cattle tramplingwhat was left of his wheat field. His already low spirit slipped into his bootsand mingled with the dirt between his sockless toes.

Themeager harvest left from the hail and rain last week was no more.

Bart,Joe and Doug McKinley promised to drive him off his farm. They wanted tooverrun the rest of the valley but Daniel’s farm was like a cork at the uppermouth between the valley and the McKinley spread in the next valley. He stillhad the bruises where they had beat him up every day for the last three days. The next time they said he would not walk away.

He hadlived a useless wandering life until last fall when he won this farm in a pokergame. The old man had said he was through with it anyway and Daniel had movedin.

A rovingpreacher had told Daniel about Jesus, God’s son, and he had accepted Him as hislord. Daniel thought he could change his life and had worked hard all summer;fixing buildings, repairing corral and fence, plowing, clearing, planting andtrying to clear the endless little green weeds that were growing everywhere. This wheat field would have seen him break even this year and, now, it wasgone. If he skimped, he might have enough for one more year.

Thingshad been going good until last week. He was reading his Bible and praying andhad decided he needed a wife. There were no available single women near here sohe had taken a chance and sent money east for one of those mail order brides. She was sitting beside him on the wagon seat as the depression settled deeper.

She hadstepped from the stage coach bundled in heavy clothes and with one smallsuitcase. Her face was all but hidden by a fur bonnet but her high cheek bonesand sharp features made him winch. She was dirty and her hands were callousedand rough. Even the paper she passed him was dirty and read; ‘No English.German, I think.’ It had no signature but was obviously from the people who hadsent her to him.

Her onlyword to him was “Husband?” in a low, almost masculine voice. He had grunted andmotioning for her to follow, he led her to the local preacher and they weremarried. He noticed her name when she signed the marriage certificate as OlgaGunderson.

Hecouldn’t bring himself to kiss her. Thatwill come, I suppose; he thought as he helped her onto the wagon seat and theystarted towards his farm. His bruises ached some but he knew he was on his own.The town men were too afraid of the McKinley’s to help him.

Daniel didn’tknow that Olga had no family and the Catholic Sisters had thrown her from theirorphanage for allowing one of the local boys to kiss her.

She haddisguised herself as a man and worked as a seaman to get to America. There, having no one to help her, she had dodged into the office of the mail orderbrides to avoid the police she thought might send her back to Germany. They hadsent her here to marry Daniel.

All herlife she had wanted a husband to call her own; a family of sorts. She had grownup praying to the God she knew from the little Bible she was given in theorphanage but she was beginning to think He was not there.

This manhad been gentle enough while helping her into the wagon but he did not speak toher and did not acknowledge her question of him being her ‘husband’. She had adeep desire to hear him confirm their relationship.

Danielpicked up the reins and drove the small, work worn mustang team down the hilland into his yard. The cattle had come through here and his wood pile had beenscattered underfoot across the yard.

Hejumped down and helped Olga from her seat but the noise of approaching horseshalted their process into the cabin.

Threelarge burly men were coming toward them at a leisurely pace. Joe, on Daniel’sright, facing Olga, smiled broadly and, in a louder than necessary voice, proclaimed, “He’s got a squaw.”

“Yeh?” Bert, the middle man replied, “Might like to entertain some real men when we finishwith our friend here.”

Danielshuddered and anger started to creep into his mind. They were here to beat himto death, if they could.

Thethree stopped a few feet in front of the pair, smiling at their own humor.

Daniel determinedlystepped forward just as he noticed Olga’s foot move ahead, as if she too weremoving towards the men but her toe slipped under a piece of firewood.

Joe loosenedhis foot and started to swing out of his saddle. The other two made signs to dothe same. Things happened fast then and Daniel had to move fast just to keepup.

Olgaflipped the firewood into the face of Joe’s horse which reared back andsideways, ramming Bert’s horse and making them both grab for their saddle horns. She quickly stepped in and punched the horse in the face again driving it intoBert’s horse. Joe, unable to balance thesideways motion, went backwards off his horse and landed on his shoulders.

Danielcovered his surprise and closed his mouth before ducking in front of Bert’shorse and jumping at Doug, who was trying to control his horse. He slappedBert’s horse’s nose to keep Bert busy fighting to stay on it.

Tired ashe was, Daniel was not slow in learning a new way of fighting. Before this theyhad beat him because he had gone toe to toe with them and tried to out punchthem. This was something different and Daniel felt his pulse race withexuberance.

Hecaught Doug’s half raised foot and threw it up, tossing Doug out of his saddleand onto the ground on his behind.

Bert wasjust getting control of his horse and was reaching for his gun when Danielreached him from behind and pulled him from his saddle by his gun belt. As Berthit the ground, Daniel kicked backwards with his foot and felt it connect withDoug’s head. He was facing Joe and Olga and was just in time to see her swingthe same stick of wood into Joe’s face. Blood exploded from his nose and mouthas he fell back onto the ground.

Daniel’sstill moving foot reversed direction and met Bert’s face. He felt bone breakand blood poured from his mouth. He spun to meet Doug as he rose and drove avicious right across his body to the point of Doug’s jaw. Doug collapsed on theground without another sound; his jaw broke and hanging.

His angerspent, Daniel looked across the opening between him and Olga. For the firsttime since they met, he looked into her eyes and smiled. He wasn’t sure but hethought he saw a hint of a smile back and…….he noticed how pure blue her eyeswere.

Theywere light blue, like….. His mind raced. Likean ice covered lake. Shockingly pretty!

Theygathered the cowmen’s horses and sloshed water on them to bring them around.

Takingtheir guns, they made Joe help Bert and Doug onto their horses.

“We’llleave your guns at the line fence; where you polecats cut the wire.” Danielinformed them. “If you know what’s good for you, don’t come down this wayagain. I’ll send your cows back to you.”

“You, skunk! We’ll kill you next time.” Joe spoke through his bloody mouth creating redbubbles with every word.

For thefirst time in a long time Daniel felt good about his future. “I don’t think so.You come down here looking for trouble; we’ll give it to you and add a littlemore for good measures. Now git!” And he slapped Joe’s horse. The three rodeaway, hurting with each step and bounce the horses made.

Heturned looking for Olga but she was bent over one of the weeds looking at it.He watched as she pulled it from the ground then dug in the dirt. Her handsreappeared with what looked like three good sized rocks and she repeated theprocess with another weed.

Curiously,Daniel walked over to where she was digging at the weeds. He looked at herhands and gasped.

“POTATOES!”He burst out. The field was full of them. He thought as he looked around his unworked back fields.

Theywould not only have a harvest, they could sell them for a good dollar to thetown, the Army Fort in the next valley and the rail head just 20 miles away.

He gaveOlga a quick hug and motioned to the cabin. He made the motion for eating andwaved her inside. Daniel bent and grabbed her suit case as he walked by it andwas surprised to find it so heavy. It must weigh 40 pounds but she had handledit so easily.

Hestudied her back as they walked to the door stoop. Her heavy coat and leggingstold him little about the obviously strong muscled body under them. Histhoughts of a fat dumpy girl were obviously wrong.

Maybe she was built like a man . Hethought, oh well, he could live with that .She had punched a horse for him and he was not about to forget that.

Inside, she put the potatoes on the small table and turned to her suit case. Opening itshe produced a gun case which yielded a well-oiled new revolver.

Danielwatched as she pulled the pin on the front and removed the bullet cylinder andhe gasped when she raised the gun and pulled the trigger at the open door.

Danielhad never seen a double action revolver. His was a heavy old Navy singleaction. The double action clicked six times as fast as she could squeeze thetrigger and she turned and looked at him.

Hesmiled at her and nodded. He had a wife. He watched the smile as it crept across her face and seemed to make it comealive.

“Home.”He said as he swung his hands wide, “Make yourself to home.”

He knewshe couldn’t understand him but he motioned trying to make appropriate actionssuit his words. “I must tend to the horses.”

He gaveher another smile before turning to his chores. The horses had put in a hardsummer so he spent a little more time making them comfortable and shaking out agood portion of grain in their feed boxes. He would need their help with thepotato harvest.

Thesmell of cooked food met his nostrils when he returned through the door. Hefroze. There on a chair was her coat. The inside was lined with pockets andeach was stuffed with utensils.

Thetable was set and the food was on the plates. She had hurriedly cleaned up andchanged into some of his clothes. They did not hide Olga’s full figure andwomanly curves.

She hadtaken her bonnet off and nervously stood facing him by the stove. Her longblond hair reached almost to her waist and the light shone on her freshlywashed face.

Daniel’smouth dropped open as he stared. She…… she was ‘drop dead’ gorgeous and she hadpunched a horse for HIM!

Shelooked longingly at him and with her voice quivering slightly asked “Husband?”

Herealized this was important to her and he was looking at a wife that he wouldgo a long way to find her equal. “Yes, husband.” He whispered.

Shevisibly relaxed and took a step towards him, a questioning look still in hereyes. “Wife?” She asked, softly. These were the only two English words thepeople at the agency had helped her understand and they were the two words shedesperately wanted her new husband to acknowledge as his acceptance of her.

Daniel’smind raced with his thoughts. Mrs. Smith, the school teacher would love thechallenge to teach Olga English and three farms down was a German named BenGrumman. Daniel was sure he would not mind teaching him German, not to mentioninterpreting for them in the meantime.

The foodforgotten, he stepped toward her “Yes, wife.” And had the satisfaction ofseeing happiness like a warm spring breeze on open water spread across herface.

His mindstill going and realizing that he had a rare gift here and she was his and thathe would love her, he spoke softly, “Not husband, not wife….partner, forever.”he motioned to himself with his index finger when he said husband and her withhis second finger when he said wife, then he crossed them as tightly as hecould when he said partner.

Atfirst, she looked puzzled so he walked over to her and took her in his arms. Hekissed her forehead then leaned away.

“Not two but one” he held up his two indexfingers then put them together and wrapped one around the other.

Her eyesglistened with tears when she understood he was telling her they were one andthey would never part. “Partner,” she whispered, happily as she leaned into hiswarm tender embrace.

The following are my favorite Christian fantasy authors:
1) Stephen Lawhead
2) Karen Hancock
3) L. B. Graham
4) Sharon Hinck
5) Kathy Tyers
I left C.S. Lewis out because he is so popular. Also, I didn't include Tolkien because I don't really consider his novels Christian even though there are many Christian themes in them.
