Protection? Do we need it?

Protection? Do we need it?
Firearms or no firearms. What about knives, slingshots, beebee (did I spell that right? I never had one) guns?
I'm sure the laws differ from country to country. I believe this will be an interesting topic.

I am attempting to insert two posts from another thread to start it off, but in the meantime feel free to have a go at it!. :)

One might think that in a society where violence is all too real a prospect, it would be necessary to have a firearm for personal protection. However logically speaking it is probably more likely that more people die or are injured in the USA through 'accidental' discharges of firearms than die or are injured as a result of criminal activity.

If you include irresponsible and incompetent use of firearms as a cause of many accidents, fatal or serious, it may be that the proliferation of legally owned firearms in American homes poses an even greater danger to the population at large than does actual criminal use of guns.

I wonder statistically whether the liberal gun laws in the USA are a greater danger to the general public than are criminals with illegally held weapons.

It is probably true that criminal activity and illegally held weapons can be policed but legally held privately owned weapons are simply too numerous for there to be effective police control over them.

An interesting statistic I once read was that there are more deaths by gunfire yearly in just New York alone, deliberate and accidental, than in the whole of the UK's 66 million population.

Is it time The Church in the US took a stand and encouraged its members to waive their constitutional rights to carry firearms as an example to others and in the interests of peace?

Should there be stricter control of lethal weapons?

Regards Chris.

As a former police officer and sheriff's deputy I would like to see firearm ownership restricted as it is in Canada and the UK. However it's never going to happen. When the second amendment was written the "arms" were muskets and pistols shooting balls, not very accurately, and intended to be used if a militia was called up. Today private citizens can legally purchase firepower greater than many police agencies have in this country and there is of course a great black market in illegal weapons. In the U.S. many more people are killed by firearms each year than are killed in the UK and Canada combined, much to our shame. We can only hope the return of the Lord is not very far away.
