A cover letter accompanies your resume and gives it a personal touch. It provides a brief outline of your professional and personal attributes as they relate to the position you are applying for. Ideally, it will catch the interest of the employer enough to read your resume.
A Typical Cover Letter:

Today's Date: Month, day, year
Addressee: Name, title, address
Salutation: ie: Dear Mr. Paul O'Toole:

State why you are writing
Identify the position you are applying for
Provide a general comment about the company
