In another affirming example of post September 11 unity, Sparrow Records is partnering with EMI label Manhattan Records to distribute The Spirit of America, the debut recording from New York City policeman Daniel Rodriguez, to Christian Bookstores nationwide, effective immediately.
Dubbed “America’s Tenor” by the media, Rodriguez grew up in Brooklyn listening to the theatrical voices of Mario Lanza and Placido Domingo, but eventually needed a regular job to support his dream of becoming a professional singer. He joined the NYPD in 1996, working the beat patrol and in security, and was often asked to represent the force by singing at public events, including a New York Yankees game, where he was introduced by then Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
In the aftermath of terrorist attacks on America, Rodriguez had a unique support gift to offer in his heartfelt voice. In a matter of days, his renditions of “God Bless America” and the National Anthem gave comfort throughout the country and led to appearances on The Today Show, Live with Regis & Kelly, Good Morning America, Larry King Live, Late Show with David Letterman, and The World Series. Next, a Rodriguez CD single was made available to the public with profits going directly to the Twin Towers Fund.
Soon after, renowned jazz producer/composer Tom Scott approached Rodriguez and worked with him to secure a recording contract with Manhattan Records. The Spirit of America, featuring patriotic favorites plus faith-based songs like “Ave Maria” and “The Lord’s Prayer,” was first released to the general marketplace this spring, where it remains a top-seller.
“I’m living my life-long dream,” says Rodriguez, who pursued a singing career even after becoming a police officer at the Manhattan South Precinct. “I’m singing songs that are both meaningful to me and that inspire others. The album is a compilation of what my life has been about - a bit of the conqueror as well as the conquered, and a lot of faith. The songs reflect my own hills and valleys.”
Early indications show that The Spirit of America is relevant to the Christian marketplace as well.
"Daniel Rodriguez has enjoyed an amazing platform over the last year performing before millions of Americans. His expanding popularity presents a unique opportunity for CBA retailers to reach core Christian music shoppers, and infrequent music shoppers as well,” says David Crace, Vice President of Marketing for Chordant Distribution Group. “This record makes a great in-store play CD. Initial reaction to the release has been very encouraging as CBA retail has rallied to support the art of a fellow believer."
Rodriguez will continue to support The Spirit of America in major concert and television appearances (Hollywood Bowl; August 30 - September 1, Jerry Lewis Telethon; September 2).
