~The Child & The Shepherd~
Once upon a time, into the Wildcat Hills of America, came a small child; woebegone, pale and wan. Yet her long, dark auburn hair glowed like a slow-burning ember. Her name was Andromeda. She grew up in, and roamed through, the sand hills of Nebraska. Abused, silent, alone and isolated, she learned how to cope with many things on her own.
Yet she had an unseen helper. His name was Jesus. Jesus came to her at night, you see, in her nighttime visions. Jesus would take her to fantastic places where they would quietly commune with one another. Standing beside Him, she would feel strong, loved and accepted. As small as she was, standing beside Jesus, she would feel a mountainous strength pour into her, like warm, liquid honey.
He was actually real, you see, when He came to her, and not just a figment of the imagination. He was as real as the breath she breathed. Time nearly stood still, as she and her Lord would communicate during those unbelievably peaceful times of rapturous beauty.
The early memory of these miraculous times stuck with this child through all the journeys of all her days. These times were like a restore point on a computer. These visions were like a powerful point of reference, when she needed to refresh & restore perspective in her life. They were also like a solid compass point, to which she could return to, like a home base.
As you surely know, the sighing or howling winds of life are not always easy on us, nor do they always seem fair. When engaging in the intricacies and difficulties of life, one can surely loose their aforetime, sure footing and enter into a blinding fog. When ships at sea enter into this, they have the helpful lighthouse, to guide their way, visually. And they have the penetrating sound of the foghorns to audibly help direct their course, during the confusing times of the fog's enveloping sheath of blindness.
From a human perspective, we also have the Lord Jesus to provide the light of His truth, & the joy of His inner voice within us, to steer us along our way. Jesus also acts as an Anchor, to keep us from drifting too far off of a healthy course in our life.
The very deep impact of Andromeda's having such a solid Friend & Savior enter into her life at such a tender age, gave this child a much more sure footing, than would have otherwise been possible. And yet, as many storms blew & raged into her life, she came so very close to loosing her footing so many times. At times, she would be perilously perched along the side of a great precipice, clinging to some barely attached root, and surely doomed to fall to a crashing death. Then her beautiful Savior & Friend would come graciously to her aid, to prevent her from sustaining extreme injury or a very sure death.
Dramatic & very real encounters with our Lord & Shepherd can tend to give a person a more solid footing in life. Like having that compass or restore point I spoke of earlier. As this child continued to grow in life, there were even more significant encounters which she experienced with the Shepherd of her life. Each experience became yet another restore or compass point in her life.
Even when it seemed that her Shepherd's presence and influence had become very faint in her life, she would have the benefit of being able to reflect back to other days. Days when her Shepherd's presence and influence was bold, powerful & very tangibly real.
Many days have spun by in this child's life. Now, she becomes older, with much silver sparkling in her hair. And her walk has nearly but slowed to a crawl, some days. But then, there are always those restore points, upon which she reflects. As she stares dreamily into the sky, the memories come, & there is a new sparkle in her eyes. And a look of wonder creeps slowly into her expression, as she lifts her head anew, & wonders.....just when will her Shepherd choose to visit her again.
