Richard Deemy: Editor

1 Timothy 1:17Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

These two words in our English language denote similar meanings and can be both given and received.  As Christians, we primarily think of these words as describing our feelings for and admiration of God, the Father and Jesus Christ our Savior.  It should also apply to the Holy Spirit, who constantly guides, guards and governs us by His gentle presence.

When we apply these words to other human beings, these words relate to how we view others in our circle of influence.  Respect and honor should begin at home.  Husbands and wives are instructed by God to honor and respect one another.  Never to subject one another, rather submitting to one another in love.  Colossians 3:18-19 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.

Children should also be taught to respect their elders.  The lack of this teaching in the home is evident as those raised over the last several decades show little respect for authority, be it in the home or in public.  Our prisons are full of them.

Having said all this, I quickly add that respect and honor need to be earned as well.  If a person wants respect, they should live a life that garners respect.  They should live a life which is honorable and godly.

1 Peter 2:12having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.
