Love Your Neighbor
I've been thinking about when the pharisees sought to trip up the Lord with their questioning: "Master, which is the great commandment in the law?" He, with infinite wisdom, replied, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." (Matthew 22:36-40).
We've heard that we should "follow the Golden Rule." You know, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
If that's the Golden Rule, then "Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind" must be the Platinum Rule. Maybe the Palladium Rule.
I am learning this month that the Platinum Rule absolutely must come first. If a person doesn't first love God, he or she will never be able to love his or her neighbor (that is, his or her fellowman).
Now that I love the Lord (and note that I love Him because He first loved me) now I am free, I am enabled to love my neighbor. Before I didn't love anyone but myself. (And, really, I didn't even love myself. I loathed myself.)
Thank God - He has taught me how to love!
