Mothers Day... again?

Mothers’ Day….

It comes once a year in May.  It was formed, I am sure, to appreciate all that mothers do for their children.  And every year, I see more and more children who have no appreciation of their own mother.  They can make all the excuses in the world for not having a relationship, but there is really no excuse.  If nothing else, she carried you for nine months and then gave birth to you.   This was basically a year, she gave to you and nurtured you… rather than having an abortion.

I heard of a group this year of mothers whose children of all ages have left them… just choosing to not have a relationship.   I know that we have all had disagreements with our parents.  Some more so than others.  But couldn’t you have appreciation for what she did for you en utero?   You say, but that was a long time ago… do I have to remember that for the rest of my life?  YES!  It was the most important time of your life when you were the MOST vulnerable.  She worked through morning sickness and foods disagreeing with her, as well as growing fat, stumbling over swollen feet!  She guarded you when you could do nothing to save yourself.

Yes, your mother has made mistakes.  Maybe lots of them.  Maybe she feels sorry for that or maybe she doesn’t…  I don’t know… I don’t know your mother.  But I can speak for myself.  I made a LOT of mistakes.  I did things that I would give my life to change… but I couldn’t and I can’t.  Mistakes were made.  Sorry doesn’t help.  But I can tell you this.  Every year in May comes a reminder of what an awful mother looks like.  Every year it comes to remind me that I blew it… and badly.   Every year comes a day when I have to say, “I forgive you!” to myself.

And I have to ask you, “Can’t you forgive me too?  Please?”  I ask those of you who are reading this and who have had difficulty forgiving your mother, do it now… today.  Do it for once and for all.  If you are alive today, it is because of your mother and she deserves a thank you.  Bless her today.

Forgiveness, now, that is a different thing. When it comes to it, the heavy weight of carrying guilt or blame is not worth the effort and forgiving can certainly alleviate that. Sometimes just forgetting can too, but it takes a little more work. For forgiveness to truly work well, it needs be a two-way pact. Anyway is a good day to forgive if the emotion is sincere.

Mothers Day was invented to sell cards. Most of the odd "days" were invented to sell more cards...and then flowers, trinkets, dinners-out, etc. The celebration of "days" became a means to a business end, that of making money.

Are mothers worth having their own day? Maybe. Maybe not. All these special days seem ridiculous to me. If children have a good relationship with their mothers, then they show positive feelings throughout the year. If they don't have a good relationship, why would a forced show of positive feelings be something any mother wants?
