Why Mustard Seed?

Luke 17:5-6 The apostles said to the Lord “Show us how to increase our faith.” The Lord answered, “If you have faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘May you be uprooted and thrown into the sea,’ and it would obey you!”

As I was reading this morning I came across that scripture and, the Lord began talking to me. This is what He said. “I used the illustration of a mustard seed because of its small size. It is like someone who just hears about Christ and receives Him into his heart. A mustard seed knows what it is. It has no question about it. It also knows what it must do in order to grow. The seed must begin growing deep roots before it grows too big above the soil. Growing these deep roots will allow it to support its huge weight as it fully matures, allowing it to stand firm when the wind blows, and they will provide nourishment to the whole tree. Next, the tree begins to sprout up taller and taller. Proudly displaying for all to see what it is. It is not ashamed to be seen as a mustard tree. It doesn’t want to hide as a maple or an oak. No, it want’s the whole world to know that it is a proud mustard tree! Finally, when it has grown to maturity it begins producing a harvest 100 times that which was originally planted. It can also provide a cool resting place for anyone who comes along.”

You see, the Lord used the parable of the mustard seed to talk about faith because that is how our faith in God should grow. When the seed gets planted, and you accept Christ into your life, now you have to start growing roots in the Word, or you will get nowhere. At the same time, you must start growing up and letting the whole world see that you are a child of God. Don’t be ashamed of it! Though you may be small to start, the Lord will be with you always taking care of you just like a gardener would the mustard tree. As your faith begins to grow more and more, make sure your roots are also growing deeper and deeper into the Word of God. Then once you start coming into maturity, you will produce a harvest 100 fold what was originally sown. You will be a place for both the saved and sinners to come and rest, for only pure love will be coming from you. Your fruit will provide nourishment to all who come to you and the message of the kingdom will be spoken to all.
