Repentance Must Precede Restoration

Luke 15:18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you,

Scripture Lesson: Luke 15:11-31

Most of us know the story of the Prodigal Son very well.  It is actually more about the compassion and mercy of the Father, than the wayward son. However, for this study, we need to focus also on the path that led the son to being reconciled with his father.

Many of us may have had wayward children.  There may be some of you, who have been praying for your child for a very long time.  We must be like the father in our story and not give up on them!

If your child has broken relationship with you, do whatever you can to assure them they are loved, that the door remains open for them. The decision is theirs.  They need to accept responsibility for their actions, which leads them to repentance and a turning away from evil acts of rebellion.

You cannot become an enabler to them, for you cannot welcome rebellion into your home. However, once they come to their senses, as the “prodigal” in our story does, they should always rest assured they are welcome in your home. 2 Corinthians 7:10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.

PRAYER: Lord God, you know how much I love my children.  My desire is for all to be saved and call upon you as their personal Savior and Lord.  Thank you for giving me wisdom concerning how I treat them. Your desire for them to be restored is even greater than mine.  Please give me the courage to take an uncompromising stand before them and obey Your will above all.  Let your infinite love for them fill me with compassion. Holy Spirit, continue to reach out to them and urge them to repent and come home.  Amen!
