Richard Deemy: Editor

Hebrews 10:23-25 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.   Scripture Lesson: 2 Timothy 3:1-9

Pastor Alistair Begg, of Truth For Life Ministries, was speaking to a class of students at a Bible College in Texas recently and shared this quote from Willam Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army.  He was asked by an interviewer back in 1900 what he considered to be the challenges of the Church in the coming century (19th).  He replied that he considered the chief dangers to be:

  1. Religion without the Holy Spirit.
  2. Christianity without Christ.
  3. Forgiveness without repentance.
  4. Salvation without regeneration.
  5. Politics without God.
  6. Heaven without Hell.

His summation was very prophetic.  It has certainly been fulfilled in the succeeding generations.  Paul’s words to young Timothy in the scripture lesson above, spells out in detail what William Booth was concerned about.

We have witnessed those who deny the credibility and necessity of the Holy Spirit in many Churches today.  Few Churches today experience the presence of the Holy Spirit, evidenced by the miraculous!

Many Churches busy themselves with preaching a “social gospel,”  placing their emphasis on works rather than a radically transformed life.

Few Churches offer an altar call at the end of the message. Even if they do, more emphasis is placed on not intimidating them by asking them to make a public confession.

Seldom mentioned is the need to repent and surrender to Jesus Christ as Lord of their lives.  Let’s just get them to pray a prayer and add them to our roll.  The message of salvation needs to be accompanied by instruction concerning a changed life.  It must be followed by obedience to Christ Jesus.  (John 15:8)

We all have seen the steady decline of God’s influence upon our leaders.  They have progressively seen to it that all mention of God is removed from public life.  They refuse to be held accountable to God for their actions.

Very little is mentioned of hell from most pulpits.  The message of grace, which God certainly offers to all who believe, has drowned out the fact that anyone who refuses his gracious offer of forgiveness has made their choice to go to a place not designed for them, rather for the devil and his angels.  God will not send them there, they made their choice and God allows them the freedom to go where they choose to spend eternity.

PRAYER:  Lord, I thank you for helping me wake up to reality!  Thank you for reminding me that I have a stake in my own destiny and also in the destiny of others in my sphere of influence.  Use me to share the gospel (the good news) that Jesus has not come to condemn, but rather to save.  Help me to be an instrument of revival in my generation!  (John 3:15-17)
