Matthew 4:19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Have you ever wondered why Jesus compared us to sheep? I think it was because we are so much like sheep. Unless sheep have a faithful leader they wander off on their own and get into trouble.

I have discovered over the years that whenever I decided to follow my own instincts it usually wound up in disaster. The disciples of Jesus learned this early on as they sought to spread the gospel. They found out there were times when their plans conflicted with God’s plans.

Acts 16:6 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia.

If we are to achieve success in our desire to follow Christ it is imperative that we 1) wait upon the Lord and 2) seek the leading of the Holy Spirit.

It is never wise to be too hasty to attempt to knock down doors. It is much more effective to wait for the Lord to open doors for us. He will only open doors in the direction He wants us to go. Our responsibility is to be obedient to respond, even if that open door leads in a direction we don’t fully understand. In hindsight we will see the hand of God.

Examples you need to check out are Abraham’s call (Genesis 12), Moses’ call (Exodus 3) and Phillip’s call (Acts 8).

Each of these men achieved great things for the Lord as they were obedient to take THE FIRST STEP. In order to be a good FOLLOWER you need to trust the one leading you. The military has perfected this through training it’s recruits to obey the commands of their officers, without question.

Until you have peace, refrain from moving from where you are. Once you have peace, don’t allow anything to keep you from taking the first step. The Lord will only reveal to you what you need to know at the moment and then He will wait for you to respond.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank you for leading me! Give me the courage to be obedient, even when I don’t fully understand what you are wanting me to do. Let me experience the blessings of Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Paul and Philip, as I take that first step through every door you open for me. Amen!
