"The Big New Year"

A few days ago I was watching an old Dragnet episode circa 1956, and it was about a policeman who was killed on New Year's Eve. Then Friday and his partner had to mournfully go and tell the widow about what had happened. The policeman was shot at close range by a drug addict who hated policemen. Now 2 NYPD officers have been killed by a gunman who was supposedly seeking revenge for the death of Eric Garner at the hand of New York city police (the man who allegedly sold cigarettes). Michael Brown was apparently also mentioned in the gunman's post. The reports are the gunman may have had a criminal record.

Are we going backwards instead of forwards? It seems to me that Friday could have arrested or ticketed the man selling cigarettes without killing him. Friday is a fictional character but there were guys like him at one time. Is it too much to ask, to leave a guy alone when they are down and out on the ground? Also there should be some kind of more intermediate charge that can be brought against an officer rather than homicide, such as professional negligence or misconduct, because there are certain people that just don't belong on the street. Also homicide is difficult to prove because of intent. With negligence you don't have to prove intent, only doing a lousy job. And are the stalwart prudent cops being ridiculed by the other cops? Prudent level headed cops should be the team leaders, not the sidekicks.

It would also help if the public was more law abiding. In the 50s and early 60s there was little violent crime except for murders commited by organized crime.

Also things used to be quiet around Christmas time, but I guess that has gone as well.

America used to be more than this.

My condolences to all the families of the dead.
