All the Kings Men - Part 3

This blog series - All the King’s Men - is about discovering who our King is more thoroughly, who he created us to be and what our commission involves.

As men we seem to thrive on competition, we understand that we all have a race to run and win.  Furthermore, we all have a mission – a purpose that is bigger than us.  For some of us, our greater purpose may be to change one life for the better - perhaps an orphan or widow - to give our life for the benefit of just one person.  For some, loving our wife while raising Godly children is our mission as we also sow seed at our work. For some of us, the reason for our existence could be to alter the course of history in our nation.  Whether on a grand scale or small, identifying and fulfilling our purpose is what makes life worth living and nothing else in this life will bring you more peace and satisfaction than knowing you are accomplishing your destiny.

The ultimate goal in life is not that others think you are successful but that God gives you his validation.  It is one of the deepest desires of every little boy, to obtain his Father’s approval.  Studies show that it is the boys who lack a loving and supportive father that tend to have a hard time overcoming the difficulties of life but are rather overcome by them.

The fact is that we all have a journey to undertake; to follow Christ and find some meaning in this life.  We are all at different places on this road and we have all come to where we are in our own way.  We may secretly wish to turn back the clock and have a “do over” because of mistakes we have made, but we know too all well, that’s just not going to happen.  So let’s not waste any more time on wishful thinking.  Let’s be men of action, men who face today not dream about yesterday or tomorrow.

If you are reading this blog, it is perhaps because you have an expectation that there is still more to this life.  Maybe you’re already aware that you have unfulfilled hopes or dreams of how the Lord might use you.  This is good; it means you haven’t given up on yourself.  God has not given up on you either, no matter where you are in life.  We have all made mistakes but none so horrible that God cannot redeem them and set us on the right course.

This is God’s goal for us; to think and act like Jesus.  This is the race set before every man and if we finish there is a prize that awaits us! Inwardly, whether we realize it or not, we all want to be able to say as the apostle Paul did, “I have finished the race…” (2 Tim 4:7).  Moreover, a divinely embedded desire to finish first has been placed in every man.  God put that desire in you; it is okay to want to finish first.  Paul goes on to tell Timothy, “And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return.  And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.” 2 Tim 4:8

However, a crucial truth is that, “… athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules” 2 Tim 2:5-6.  Make no mistake about it, God has already determined how we must finish and the rules have already been decided; there is only one way to win.  We cannot break all the rules and then expect to receive the prize; it just doesn’t work that way.  As men we understand the idea of rules, we understand what a “penalty” is and that there are consequences for breaking the rules.  The goal is to win by playing according to the rules.  Simply put, there are no cheaters in Heaven.

Hopefully I have wet your appetite for a real and engaging adventure called the Christian life.   I personally have had the privilege to meet, live, worship and work with men from most of this beautiful country we call America.  From California to New Hampshire to Oregon, from Kansas to North Carolina to Arizona and many parts in-between, there are men all across this country that love God and want to be used to further his kingdom.  What they lack is a reason bigger than them, a truly worthy cause.  They are looking for an adventure.  What they are looking for is to some degree; the indescribable.  If this is you, be assured that an exhilarating mission with your name on it is out there. Let's run!
