He [Jesus] told them still another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough." Mt. 13:33 (word in bold brackets added)

Many of you know making bread takes much patience. The method is simple: flour and water mixed, kneaded, set aside, etc. To speed up the process, the ancients learned that saving a bit of dough (leaven or yeast) from the last baking helped the dough rise quicker. Once the leaven gets in the dough, it changes its color slightly. There are many symbolisms regarding leaven. With leavening: a connection to the past, activity. Without: haste, break to the past, inactivity.

When Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt they were in a hurry. 39 With the dough they had brought from Egypt, they baked cakes of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.  Ex. 12:39 Thus because they had no time to prepare leavened dough, it was the Lord who brought Israel out of Egypt not the people.

They say a little yeast goes a long way. Just like the bit of leaven saved, Jesus (the first missionary) took a few people, made them disciples, sent them out 2x2 until they are “worked all through” the world.

6Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? 7Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.

1 Corinthians 5:6-8 (NIV)

A little sin does go a long way if we let it. We're new creatures in Christ - new bread when He cleaned out the old yeast in us and implanted the new.
