Dear Rover,
Randy's Bowl Process
Soon, in this section I will illustrate the basic procedures for turning bowls. Currently, I don't have photos of all the steps.
STEP 1
This is a piece of pecan taken from a log split in half.
STEP 2
STEP 3
Here the bowl is gripped by the chuck. I am using a 1/2" bowl gouge to cut and shape the center.
Here the outside of the bowl is cut to the desired shape. Notice the center has been cut leaving square sides. This is called a spigot or tenon, this allows the bowl to be held by a chuck so the inside of the bowl can be cut away. A face plate which is attached to the wood with screws, then threaded on the lathe can also be used.
Maple bowl as I cut away the center. The outside is actually made first and is not shown.
